Eliphaz’s 2nd Response to Job
Eliphaz finds fault with “knowledge” and “reason” of Job’s “speeches”, believing it to be “vain”, “unprofitable”, and “no good” (Job 15:1-3). Of course, Eliphaz is not speaking about the things that Job verbally agrees with in response to his friends (Job 12:3, 9-10, 12-13, 13:1-2). Eliphaz is talking about Job claiming to be righteous despite the visitation of what appears to be divine justice (Job 9:15, 10:7), and even more so that Job has the audacity to accuse God (Job 9:20-24, 28). Therefore, Eliphaz is persuaded that Job is under a delusion – such that comes upon men when they cast off the fear of God and abandon prayer (Job 15:4). So, Eliphaz proceeds by confirming Job’s own personal reflection on how bad his words sound (Job 9:20-24, 28), that indeed he has condemned himself by his own mouth (Job 15:5-6, 13). Then Eliphaz begins to upbraid Job for his insubjection to the teachings of Adam (Job 15:7) and all the doctrines passed down by the Elders of the Early Church (Job 15:8-10, 17-19).

Job 15:15-16 | Demonic Encounter: Job 4:13-21, 15:15-16, 25:4-5, 26:4-6, 13
Here, in Job 15:15-16, it appears that Eliphaz is quoting the Angel he encountered in a demonic visitation recorded in Job 4:13-21 – more specifically, verses 18-19 of Job 4. The message delivered by the spirit to Eliphaz was intentionally vague. Mysterious demonic encounters as these serve their purpose as a little nudge to push godly men forward in a wrong direction. In this case, where Eliphaz was cautiously suspicious before, he then became confident and resolved that he knew all that he needed to know about Job’s situation. Eliphaz, as the superior among Job’s three friends, is then quoted by Bildad in Job 25:4-5. Of course, then Job directly counters Bildad in Job 26:4-6, & 13.
